Miami Bites

--------------------------------------------------

It's been three years since the vampires came 'out of the coffin' and made their presence known across the world. Why? Thanks to a Japanese company, a new, sustainable source of energy for the vampires has been made. Tru Blood. Tastes like blood, feels like blood - isn't blood. The humans have mostly come to terms with it now, although opinions are split. Some detest the vampires, some adore them...and some have even worked out how to earn big bucks from them.
Here in Miami, the vampire blood selling business is at an all time high. The Morello Mafia dominates the field, but more and more businesses are popping up. See, vampire blood is like a drug - and a very popular one at that.
Coming to terms with the vampires was one thing, but what the humans don't know, is that the vampires are just the beginning of their supernatural problems...

Tyler Scott • 25 • Dealer for Morello Mafia • Shifter • FC: Xavier Samuel • OPEN

Biography »

Tyler grew up in a fairly normal household. They weren’t a rich family, but they were able to get the bills paid each month. His parents gave him enough to show they cared, but they definitely didn’t spoil him. He was taught that rewards came when you worked hard, and so he didn’t take what he was given for granted. He worked hard at school and got decent grades - he even managed to find himself a part time job, and then things changed drastically when he got mixed up in the Mafia. Now he’s a V dealer, and although it isn’t the most glamorous of jobs, he hopes to move up through the ranks. Tyler finds the lifestyle exciting, especially when it’s compared to his previous boring, mundane lifestyle. He used to be the boy that did exactly what he was told. The teachers recognised him as a boy who showed a lot of potential, and would go far in life. They would have never guessed that he would become associated with these thugs, choosing to be a part of an organisation that is known for encouraging illegal activities, but he loves every minute of it. Now, in this new world that has been opened up to him, anything can happen. Each day is an adventure. A dangerous one, yes, but it still promises an adrenaline rush.

Being in the Mafia has definitely changed Tyler. For one thing, he’s now a V addict, using his connections with the Mafia to score the best quality vampire blood for cheaper prices. Whenever he’s on it, he changes from his usual friendly self. His behaviour becomes more erratic, and he seems more excitable and irritable. When he’s going through withdrawals, he struggles to control his anger, and often lashes out at people. As a result, part of him wants to be able to stop taking V for good, but as far as he’s concerned, he just doesn’t have the strength or will power. Tyler, although he wouldn’t admit it, will do anything for V, and that scares him. Where would he stop and draw the line? Murder? Then he’d become a skinwalker, which would just be another thing to add onto the list of reasons why he’s heading towards rock bottom. What he wants more than anything is to protect his brother from this lifestyle and keep him out of danger. Jamie doesn’t know where Tyler disappears off to most nights, and he definitely doesn’t know his older brother takes V, and that’s how Tyler wants to keep it. Mafia business is kept within the Mafia, so if Jamie found out, his funeral would be coming years too early. He wants to be a role model to his little brother, and he fears letting Jamie see how far he’s fallen would do more damage than could ever be repaired.

Tyler has always been determined, and a risk taker. He’s headstrong and stubborn, which can sometimes lead to dire consequences. Although he doesn’t always make the best, or right decisions, if he’s close to you, you can be certain that he is actually trying to help you. He may not use more conventional methods, but he usually gets the job done. While Tyler can usually be seen constantly cracking jokes or being protective of his younger brother, his behaviour and personality completely changes when he takes V. In his mind he needs it to survive, but it turns him into a person he desperately doesn’t want to be. He becomes more violent, almost the complete opposite of his usual self, and yet it isn’t enough for him to realise it’s time to stop. Will Tyler come to his senses, or will he wait until he makes a tragic mistake before he realises how far he’s fallen?

Alyssa Masters • 24 • Waitress at Cafe Demetrio • Human • FC: Alexandra Daddario • OPEN

Biography »

At 16 years old, Alyssa had accepted the fact that she was going to die. She did have a terminal illness after all, so she was just happy that the pain would eventually end. She was tired of being, well, tired all of the time. What she had expected was some medication to help her on her way out, but what she got instead was her brother secretly slipping V into her drinks so that her body would slowly begin to repair itself. When the doctor told her that it was a miracle she had recovered at all, she confronted her brother, only to be devastated when he explained what he had done. Alyssa didn’t like that John had taken her life into his own hands, and given her the blood of some creature that stalked their prey in the night. He, as far as she was concerned, had put the blood of a monster inside of her, and that thought alone was enough to terrify her. She often worries that because the vampire blood was inside of her, she could easily be put under their control at any minute. Even though she has been told such a thing isn’t possible, it has still contributed to her crippling fear of vampires. After her brother introduced her to V, Alyssa worries that her brother is now associated with them, and is scared that he is offering it to others within the hospital. She knows how much being a doctor and helping others means to him, but is scared he’ll go too far one day and regret his actions. No matter how much she cares for and loves him, she still can’t get over the feeling of betrayal, even if what he did all those years ago was out of love. Alyssa desperately wants her big brother back, but isn’t sure she can ever really forgive him for tricking her into taking the illegal substance. John was thinking about her as a patient, rather than remembering that she’s his little sister - with her own mind. As a result, their conversations are now forced, as if they’re just strangers.

While working at Cafe Demetrio, Alyssa has started noticing more and more mysterious people coming in, including the vampires, making her job incredibly difficult. When she sees a vampire, her automatic response is to panic and freeze, or stutter when she speaks. A few years ago, when vampires first ‘came out of the coffin’, she couldn’t even serve her first vampire customer because she was that frightened. Instead, she just ran out the back of the cafe. Alyssa wonders if the vampire whose blood helped her heal is actually a regular customer, but she is just unaware. She also wonders if any of the vampires know her brother personally, since she knows if he is still offering V to patients in critical conditions, then he must know who his sources are. Part of her is interested in the supernatural, and she wants to pluck up the courage to start a conversation with a vampire without almost breaking down into tears, but it is easier said than done.

Although Alyssa is quite a caring and affectionate person, who, unlike her brother, is able to actually show it through her actions, she can be incredibly stubborn, even if she knows she’s wrong. She’s just one of those people. She also has trust issues, mainly because of what John did to her, but also because she feels as though there is so much she is yet to learn - so much that has been kept from her. Alyssa grew up expecting death, only to be saved by the blood of a supposedly vicious creature, so what other supernatural beings exist that haven’t made themselves known? One thing Alyssa hates with a passion, is having other people make decisions for her, as she likes to be independent and in control of her own life and what happens to her, making relationships a little difficult.

Eric Northman • 30/Over 1100 • Vampire King of Florida/Owner of Fangtasia • Vampire • FC: Alexander Skarsgård • OPEN

Biography »

In his human life, Eric Northman was a viking, born in 870 AD in Sweden. His parents wished that he would choose a wife, but Eric had other ideas. In fact, he was a bit of a womanizer and was far more interested in enjoying what unmarried life had to offer. In 890 AD, whilst Eric was having sex with a servant, werewolves invaded their home and killed his family. Before his father died, he declared Eric a king and made him promise to avenge his family. Later, Eric was wounded badly in Scandinavia and his Viking companions decided to stay with him. During the night, someone - or something - murdered his comrades, much to Eric’s horror. A mysterious, tattooed, teenage boy appeared, calling himself ‘Death’. He introduced himself to the dying Eric. Having seen his strength on the battlefield, the 1,000 year old vampire Godric offered to turn Eric, who agreed. After that, the two were inseprable for a few hundred years and they had an immensely strong maker/progeny bond, Godric being the only one that Eric truly cared about, now his family was gone.

By 1905, the two had long since parted ways, pursuing their own personal goals alone. Of course, it was upsetting for the both of them, but after all, they had eternity to live; it was inevitable that they’d meet again. Eric made his way to San Francisco, where he met Pam. At the time, Pam was the madam of a brothel which had a problem. The problem being that someone was killing her girls, and that ‘someone’ was a vampire. Two vampires, in fact. Bill Compton and his maker. Eric was older than both of them and much more powerful, so he was able to put a stop to what they were doing. Pam was incredibly grateful and to repay him, she slept with Eric. Afterwards, she asked him to make her a vampire. Eric refused automatically. Pam then took matters into her own hands and slashed her wrists, forcing Eric to turn her or watch her die. Eric hesitated for a moment, before caving in and turning her.

Now, Eric is king of Florida. He is still close with his progeny, Pam, and the two opened up a vampire bar together, named Fangtasia. Although he’s currently not in contact with Godric, he knows that Godric would be proud of his position as king. Pam has also proved to be a brilliant vampire, and Eric is proud of her, as Godric is of him. Before being made king, Eric was a sheriff and hopes that one day - sooner rather than later - Pam will be able to be a sheriff, since he knows she’s capable of it. Recently, Eric invited his ‘sister’ Nora to Miami, whom he is very close with. However, he is growing increasingly suspicious of her, and knows that something is going on behind the scenes in Miami, but he’s not quite sure what it is. He’s determined to find out, though. Personality wise, he is calculating, loyal and generally willing to kill any humans - or vampires - that wrong him, or stand in his way. He is confident, manipulative and charming, yet cold and has a very vicious streak in him.

Nora Gainesborough • 25/Almost 600 • Works with Sophie-Anne • Vampire • FC: Lucy Griffiths • OPEN

Biography »

If you asked Nora about her human life, her natural reaction would be to laugh straightaway. Her life before becoming a vampire is nothing but a distant memory to her. She has no regrets, no worries, no feelings about it - after all, she can barely even remember it. All she knows is that she was born in Surrey, England in the early 1400s. Nora also remembers being turned willingly at 25 by Godric. The first hundred years of her vampire life were incredible fun, and she had some of her fondest memories. Since it was a long time ago, back in the time when vampires weren’t known about, Nora, her maker Godric and her vampire ‘brother’ Eric could do whatever they liked, with no consequences. It was pure perfection. The trio were unstoppable; wreaking havoc all over the world. But all good things must come to an end, and somewhere down the line, they parted ways. Of course, their paths crossed, but the times were changing. Changing for the worst, from Nora’s perspective.

When the vampires ‘came out of the coffin’, it’s safe to say Nora wasn’t happy about it. At the time, she was a member of the Vampire Authority, who were the ones who first decided to reveal their kind to the humans. Nora was the type of vampire who thrived off of killing humans and draining them completely of blood; but now she couldn’t do that anymore. At first, Nora tried to get along with the Authority and learn to respect the decision they made, but it didn’t quite work. She quickly adapted to a life of living off of fake blood (Tru Blood) but Nora couldn’t ever get along with the Authority again. To her, it seemed like she was an outsider within the Authority and she didn’t have time for that, so she left. Eric heard about her departure and quickly invited her to Miami, because they hadn’t seen each other in over a hundred years. Nora accepted the offer and came to live in Miami, where she met Sophie-Anne. The two became ‘best friends’, as close as two vampire women could be. Nora knows about the blood selling business, and supports it. Nora believes her blood is sacred, as is every vampire’s, but doesn’t mind using it to make money.

Eric’s invitation wasn’t the only reason Nora came to Miami, though. After she left the Authority, Nora had nothing. A few years prior to the vampire revelation, Nora’s progeny, Zachary, died. Zachary was her first and only progeny, and she cared for him very much. He was her everything, and although he wasn’t a member of the Authority, they spent all their time together and Zachary showed a lot of promise. Nora felt like she was carrying on Godric’s bloodline by creating him, and she wanted Zachary to be the best he could be, since that would please Godric. When he died, Nora was distraught and went on a rampage, killing every human in site. The Authority reprimanded her and cleared up her mess, whilst leaving Nora to mourn. Nora is still unaware of the circumstances in which Zachary died and she’s determined to find out…and seek revenge if she has to.

Cassie Brooke • 22 • Waitress at Merlotte’s • Werewolf • FC: Antonia Thomas • OPEN

Biography »

Cassie had been 10 years old when her parents were celebrating being happily married for 15 years. That was the night Cassie’s mother finally revealed to her husband that she was a werewolf. She had thought that mentioning she was two-natured before would have torn them apart, and she loved him too much to risk losing him, but was sure that after being together for so long, they could survive anything. Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to be the case. Cassie’s dad stormed out of the house, angry that his wife could keep such a thing from him. He went to have a few drinks with friends and ended up revealing his wife’s secret, exposing her as a werewolf. This wouldn’t have ended too badly if his friends had told him they were bounty hunters. That night, thanks to the tip from Cassie’s dad, his so called friends talked the woods around his home, eager to do what they did best - hunt. It wasn’t really personal, to them it was just a job. That was also the night Cassie’s mother was killed. When she woke up to find her dad smelling of alcohol with a look of desperation on his face, she knew something was seriously wrong. He explained about her mother being a werewolf, how he assumed it was possible she was one too, and how her mum was now dead because of his friends. He begged for her forgiveness, but Cassie just packed up her things and ran away. At 10 years old, she had already experienced more pain than most grown men. She was taken into care, and eventually heard the news that her father had killed himself shortly after she had left him, but she no longer felt anything for the man who shared her blood. When she could, she left her carehome and found herself drawn to Miami, hoping a new location would help her to forget her past.

As a result of her past, Cassie shuts off her heart to pretty much everyone, even the local wolf pack and Niall, although they are the closest thing she’s had to a family and friends since the incident. She has no intention of making any more friends, struggling to trust that they wouldn’t just leave her as soon as they began to bond. When sensitive topics come up in conversation, or Cassie simply doesn’t want to discuss something, she avoids having to by replying sarcastically or with blunt comments. She’s been told that she has a dry sense of humour, but she just thinks people don’t understand where she’s coming. In Cassie’s mind, what she finds funny, is funny to everyone, but her jokes can often sound cruel and insulting. No one but those who are two-natured know that she’s a werewolf. Even she didn’t really believe she was until she turned for the first time. The others in her pack had told her that with only one parent carrying the werewolf gene, there was always a chance that the child would not become a were themselves, but now she knows she has the same gift. Cassie’s glad that she’s part of the were community, though, as it’s something she and her mother have shared, which is why she often finds herself wondering if the wolf she shifts into is identical to her mothers.

The dictionary definitions for the words feisty, sassy, and sarcastic, should just have Cassie’s face beside them. She doesn’t want people getting too close to her, but if you can get her to put down her guards, you would actually see that all she wants is to feel safe and happy, without worrying about whether someone she loves is going to be dead by morning. To love someone as much as she loved her mum - and even her dad, although she would never admit it now - would be great, but Cassie is determined to never have her heart broken ever again because it would destroy her. She’s always getting herself into trouble because of her crude comments, as there appears to be no filter between her brain and her mouth. She says what she wants to say, and won’t let anyone try and intimidate her. Cassie may look small and harmless, but she sure does pack a punch.

Niall Roth • 21 • Bartender at Merlotte’s • Shifter • FC: Caleb Landry Jones • OPEN

Biography »

Growing up, Niall was always the person that stood out from the crowd, and being a young Shifter didn’t help him either. Neither did his bright hair. He has always been the person that wasn’t afraid to make a fool of themselves, to try everything and anything to make someone laugh, to make people see that things really did getting, and as he soon found out, not everyone loved his enthusiasm for life. If you asked him what he remembers most about school, he would probably say the bullying, but he isn’t bitter about it. In fact, he feels sorry for the people that try to torment him. As far as he’s concerned, they were so insecure that the only way they could feel good about themselves was to make others feel worse. No matter how many times they shouted abuse or left him covered in bruises, Niall always got right back up again, because he’s never been the sort to be left downtrodden or defeated. Each day he ignored or laughed off their nasty comments, he became a little bit stronger. He grew to like himself more as he got older, as he realised that there were always going to be people that didn’t like you. If they couldn’t see that he was a good person, then it didn’t matter to him. As long as those close to him knew, everything was fine.

Now Niall works at Merlotte’s as a bartender, entertaining the customers with his bar tricks and skills. While he’s working, as well as joking around with Cassie, he often glances around the bar, letting his eyes rest on other supernatural creatures within the room. To humans, most of them appear as normal people, but Niall knows better, and he’s interested in how each species works. Vampires, weres, other shifters, they all frequent the bar whenever they’re in the area, and he never really had a chance to interact with other supernatural creatures when he was younger, as it was just a general rule that they never really got too close. Now that the vampires have revealed themselves to the world, Niall’s interested in seeing how the humans continue to  take the news, considering the shifters and weres are still reluctant to expose themselves as well. He understands that if the humans could accept them, it would be a wonderful thing, but personally, he doesn’t want others knowing about the shifters because for once, he feels like he belongs. He’s worried that it could all change if the humans turn on them, and he’ll be back to being that 10 year old kid that had no friends, and that’s the last thing he wants for him and his friends.

If you ever need someone to watch your back, or to cheer you up, Niall’s your guy. He’s always made an effort to try and be nice to everyone, because he knows what it feels like to not be given a chance by others - to feel alone. That’s why he loves being part of the shifter community, because after so many years, he’s finally found his family. If given a job, he’ll see it through until the end, perservering no matter how tough it may be. Giving up just isn’t something he does. He’s confident, charming, and incredibly loyal to everyone who is close to him, especially if they are in the shifter community. Just say the word and he would offer to do anything for them without hesitating.

John Masters • 33 • Doctor at Miami City Hospital • Human • FC: Cillian Murphy • OPEN

Biography »

When John was 25, his life was pretty much perfect. He had a wonderful girlfriend, was finally on track to becoming a doctor, had a great group of friends, but then his 16 year old sister was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and everything fell apart. The whole family had been aware of Alyssa’s condition, thinking she was safer after each and every trip to the hospital. They had hoped the medication and treatment would eventually stop the terrible disease from spreading throughout her body, but when their family doctor told them all that she had only weeks left to live, John refused to believe it was true. To say that he and his sister had always been incredibly close would have been an understatement. After spending hours shouting at the doctors to try absolutely anything to save her, he sat down by his sisters hospital bed, staring down at his brave little sister who still had a smile on her face. She had known her time was coming to and end, and all Alyssa wanted was for her big brother to be happy as they enjoyed their last moments together, but while he nodded his head and offered her a fake smile, in the back of his head, he knew he would never let her go. That night, he visited one of the local dealers, looking for one particular drug - V. John had heard the rumours. That it could heal almost anything, like a miracle in a vial. Whenever he visited his sister in hospital, he secretly poured a small amount of V into her drinks, waiting for it to do its job. Of course, she recovered at a steady rate. The doctors thought it was a miracle, but Alyssa knew better. She confronted her brother, and he explained about the vampire blood. Ever since then, Alyssa has refused to speak to her brother, hating him for taking her life into his own hands, and even though he misses her dearly, John doesn’t regret what he did. He did it because he loved her, and he’d do it again.

Several years later, John is doing what he does best - helping people. He’s a doctor at the local hospital, and pays special attention to all those patients that are suffering from a terminal illness of some kind. He’s managed to work his way up the ranks at an amazing speed, making him one of the most respected and sought after  doctors they have, but he’s risking it all by offering those patients in critical conditions what he gave his sister. John knows V is illegal, but if it can cure these people of their illnesses, and help them to reunite with their families, then he doesn’t care. He regularly meets up with some of the Morello dealers, and has actually become a reliable customer. He keeps quiet, they keep quiet, and no one else besides the patients needs to know about what he’s doing. John knows these families would do anything to keep their loved ones alive, and that thought alone lets him ignore his thoughts, as they focus on the inevitable consequences of his actions. On one hand, he’s doing a great deal of good, helping people that would otherwise never spend another day with their families, but he’s also working with the Mafia. Working with the dealers. Persuading people to use an illegal drug. His career, and everything he’s worked so hard is in danger of being taken away from him, but he knows he can’t just stand by when he can help these people. That’s why he’s more than prepared to risk it all.

John is an ambitious person who is determined to give back to the world, which sometimes tends to result in him making decisions that others necessarily wouldn’t, but that’s what sets him apart from the crowd. He’s willing to do absolutely anything to help anyone who needs him. Unlike others, who might view you as a lost cause, John will be the one to perservere, and show you that there’s still hope. Although he isn’t the most affectionate or tactile person around, he does really care about those close to him, but struggles to express his love through his actions. Unlike many other humans, John doesn’t mind the vampires, mainly because their blood can do wonders. He’s loyal, patient, and friendly, so if you ever told anyone that he was associated with the Mafia, they would probably admit you to a psychiatric ward for your insane lies.
